Masvingo – Zanu PF continues to maintain its grip on rural constituencies after emphatic victories in both Mwenezi East and Chivi South constituencies during Saturday’s by-elections.

The party also won two Chivi rural wards.

Roman Catholic-run Avhunga Secondary School head, Master Makope (44) won the Mwenezi East by-election by 12 177 votes to CCC candidate Tendeukai Mandizvidza’s 1 573 votes.

The by-elections were held to fill a vacancy left after the death of Jusby Omar, who was the MP.

Weekend’s by-election was Mwenezi East’s fourth by-election inside seven years. After the recall of former Zanu PF Mwenezi East legislator Kudakwashe Bhasikiti in 2015, his two successors’ tenures ended prematurely.

In Chivi South, Munyaradzi Zizhou of Zanu PF romped to victory with 6 832 votes against CCC’s Paul Mhlolo who got 1 414 votes.

The seat fell vacant after Zanu PF recalled Chivi South MP Killer Zivhu. Zivhu was dismissed from Zanu PF in July 2020 and from Parliament for misconduct after calling for dialogue between President Mnangagwa and CCC’s Nelson Chamisa.

In Ward 8, Zanu PF candidate Fidiles Dzingirai won with 678 Votes against CCC candidate Murambiwa Betwa who got 284 votes.https://twonations.co.zw
