TSCZ deploys officers to monitor Easter traffic

MUTARE –Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) is deploying 23 teams of traffic safety and Police officers to all major highways in a road deaths awareness campaign.

TSCZ board vice chairperson retired commissioner Felly Mujanga said the awareness began on April 3, 2023. and ends on April 19, 2023.

She said this at the TSCZ Easter Holiday Road Safety campaign held at a Mutare Hotel on Monday.

She said traffic offenders will be ticketed and there will lessons for motorists on traffic laws to highlight the importance of road safety particularly during holidays. 

The campaign was attended by TSCZ managing director, Munesuishe Munodawafa, National Police Spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, driving schools representatives and bus companies’ representatives.

“We will be ticketing traffic offenders as well as giving them education on traffic laws. We deem it important to highlight the significance of road safety. Our roads are meant to give access to both economic activities as well as social infrastructure.

“I am appealing to all drivers to be cautious as this could save their own lives and those of their loved ones. Our desire is to reduce road accidents by 25 percent by 2025 and 50 percent by 2030,” she said.

She also reiterated that 73 deaths and 202 injuries were recorded during last year’s Easter holiday marking a surge from 21 deaths and 117 injuries in 2021. 

Nyathi said Police is dedicated to preventing loss of life during the Easter Holidays and will be mounting roadblocks on all major highways.
