Prison escapee shot in Beitbridge

BEITBRIDGE – Davison Chawa (42), one of the three inmates who escaped from Chiredzi holding cells on Friday last week was shot on the right knee and rearrested by Beitbridge CID officers who teamed up with those in Chiredzi.

Chawa and Moses Madzokere (24) were taken from Chiredzi Prison by CID Chiredzi on March 10, 2022 for further charges of unlawful entry and theft and were detained at ZRP Chiredzi holding cells. 

The next day, Chawa, Madzokere and Dama escaped from Police custody after they inserted their hands through a peep hole and damaged a padlock to open the door.

Madzokere and Chawa went on to commit another offense of unlawful entry and theft where they stole an Itel cellphone with an Econet line and cash amounting to US$110. Chawa used the stolen phone to communicate with his girlfriend.

Efforts to get a comment from the Police were fruitless. 

One of the escapees Madzokere of Zaka is a dangerous criminal serving 24 years for rape and robbery. The other escapee Tyson Dama was serving jail time for possessing dangerous drugs.

Chawa was jailed three years and eight months and a year and 15 months for unlawful entry were suspended. 

On March 14, information was received to the effect that the accused was in Beitbridge and Chiredzi CID proceeded there and teamed up with detectives from CID Beitbridge. 

Detectives pounced on accused person but he took to his heels. They pursued while firing warning shot and commanding him to stop but he didn’t comply.

Chawa was shot once on the back of his right knee and that is when he got arrested. He was apprehended after being shot at around 9pm on Monday while trying to flee across the border to South Africa.
