Johannesburg – Intercape Bus Company, one of the top luxury bus companies in the region has permanently stopped trips to Zimbabwe and is laying off its workers.

The company has also ordered its agents in the country to immediately stop issuing tickets to clients. Normally agents in Zimbabwe could issue tickets for clients in South Africa, Botswana or any other country regardless of the trip.

The Mirror has a letter dated March 15, 2022 in which it issues the instruction and announces its withdrawal from Zimbabwean trips.

Agents in Zimbabwe remained tight-lipped when The Mirror approached them for comments. In Masvingo one of the agents is Errant Travel and Tours.

Intercape said the decision was caused by the COVID-19 pandemic which left a permanent mark on the transport industry.

“The global COVID-19 outbreak and subsequent lockdown in South Africa, Zimbabwe and various countries around the world had a significant impact on the transport industry.

“Considering the above, Intercape Ferriera Mainliner (Pty) ltd (Intercape) has made the difficult decision of ceasing operations in Zimbabwe. Furthermore, we wish to inform all Zimbabwean agents that the selling of Intercape tickets for travel domestically in South Africa, or to and from Zimbabwe is now prohibited.

The 43-year old Intercape Bus Company initially sent letters to its employees in Zimbabwe notifying them that it will temporarily lay them off for three months starting 1 May 2020. http://twonations.co.zw
