All set for Shundure tourney

CHIPINGE– The stage is set for the annual Shundure Sports Tournament to be held in Chipinge this weekend. The tournament is valued at  R10 000 which includes kits, balls courtesy of South African based Chipinge business man Matthew Shundure. The sports extravaganza is expected to feature 20 soccer, 15 netball and 5 volleyball teams from across the country and Mozambique.

Shundure has been sponsoring the tournament for the past 15 years with the aim of nurturing local talent. The tournament has been growing in stature every year in terms of sponsorship and participating teams as it now attract teams from Harare, Mutare, Rusape and Mozambique. Shundure  said they have polished up all the preparations, adding that the tournament was meant to tap talent in the district.

“All the preparations are complete and we are waiting for the kick-off date. Everything is in place. The tournament will run from Saturday to Sunday. We will have our finals to determine the winners on Sunday. We have divided the soccer teams into four groups of five  and top two teams from each group will proceed to the quarter finals,” he said.

In soccer, the winners will walk away with a kit and a trophy, runners up will get a kit, third and fourth position will get  two balls and one ball respectively. There will be awards also for the best goalkeeper and golden boot. Last year’s winners were Mutare based and Division Two side Final Touch.

In netball, the winners will get a kit and trophy while second and third winners will get two and one ball respectively the same as volleyball winners.
