18 ‘bribe taking cops’ to approach High Court for bail

BEITBRIDGE – Eighteen ZRP members, Soldiers, Central Intelligence members and some civil servants arrested at a roadblock in Beitbridge on Saturday morning for allegedly taking bribes will soon apply to the High Court for bail.
The group was denied bail by Beitbridge Resident Magistrate Takudzwa Gwazemba on Tuesday and remanded in custody to March 29, 2022.
Their lawyer, Muchiwhande Fobs Sithole of Chauke and Associates confirmed the move to Two Nations.
The bail application will be filed at the High court on Friday.
In his bail ruling, Magistrate Gwazemba agreed with the District Public Prosecutor Tinayeishe Matenga and Prosecutor Ronald Mugwagwa who said that there was a likelihood that the accused will abscond if granted bail.
The security officers were arrested for allegedly received R2 000 bribe from a Sable Class Bus at around 6am on Saturday. They were trapped by Police from the Anti-Corruption Unit who were inside the bus who immediately pounced on them after taking the marked money.
This is the second time in a few months that a group of cops numbering more than 17 were arrested at a roadblock in Beitbridge for demanding and taking bribe.
